Panel Participants

Kendall Simmons
Kendall Simmons, Retired, NFL Super Bowl Champion
Kendall Simmons is a former NFL player who played nearly 10 years after being drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers as the 30th overall pick in 2002. Following his first season, Simmons was selected as the team's rookie of the year. Shortly before his second season began in 2003, Simmons was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes and was not sure if he would be able to continue his football career. With the help of a team of doctors and a strong support network, Simmons returned to the field that same year. As he learned to manage his diabetes, he regained his strength and flourished on the football field. In 2005, he started all 16 regular season games and all four playoff games with the Pittsburgh Steelers, winning Super Bowl XL. Over the course of his career, Simmons spent most of his time on the Pittsburgh Steelers. He also played on the New England Patriots and the Buffalo Bills.
Now retired from the NFL, Simmons is still very active in the diabetes community. He has spoken to children and adults with type 1 diabetes across the country to let them know that the disease can be managed. Simmons hopes that his story can be an inspiration to children and others with diabetes.
Joe Eldridge
Joe Eldridge, Co-Founder of Team Type 1 and Former
Professional Cyclist with Team Novo Nordisk
As a co-founder of Team Novo Nordisk's predecessor, Team Type 1, Joe Eldridge brings depth both on and off the bike to the Team Novo Nordisk Development squad. A former U.S. track national champion (team pursuit, 2012), Eldridge displays his power in the sprints, at criteriums, and in single-day classics. He also serves as a mentor for young riders on the team.
Since childhood, Eldridge dreamed of being a pro athlete. His father encouraged him to play sports, but Eldridge never anticipated it would be cycling. Diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 10, he played several high school sports at the top level and only rode a bike as a way to manage his diabetes. While at Auburn University, he started riding with a group of cyclists, and riding quickly led to racing. One day at a race, Eldridge met Phil Southerland -- the only other cyclist with diabetes Eldridge had ever encountered -- and they quickly built a close friendship. Eldridge and Southerland went on to found Team Type 1, and together created a platform for other endurance athletes with diabetes to develop and compete. Eldridge finds great value in showing people that athletes with diabetes can compete at the top level of their sports.

I hate to even suggest this, but what if the cure never comes? What if long-term clinical human trials go on indefinitely into the future with no hope in sight? What if cinnamon is just cinnamon? What if cactus juice is just cactus juice and reptile saliva just reptile saliva? And what if the BCG drug is a vaccine for tuberculosis and nothing more? I have this terrible feeling I’ll be an old man with a long grey wizard’s beard and a walking cane made out of...
