Sandra Arévalo, MPH, RDN, CDN, CDE
Sandra Arévalo is a consultant, spokesperson, cultural translator, peer reviewer, and speaker. She is the former Director of Nutrition Services, co-director of The Starting Right Initiative, and co-leader of diabetes programs at Community Paediatrics, which is a program of the Montefiore Hospital and The Children's Health Fund. Sandra currently works as a Certified Diabetes Educator and Wellness Coordinator at the Institute of Family Health in NYC. She has served as chair of the NYC Nutrition Education Network, served as chair of the NYC Nutrition, Co-Chair for the Cultural Foods Group of the Greater New York Dietetic Association and Past Chair of LAHIDAN, the interest group of the Academy of Nutrition & Dietetics committed to improving the nutrition of Latinos in the U.S.

Sandra received the Nutrition Education Program of the Year Award from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics in 2012 for her work around obesity prevention with children in the South Bronx. She also received and Award of Excellence from the Hispanic Medical Association for her work helping to advance Latinos in the nutrition profession. She was nominated to be Preceptor of the Year by the Academy of Nutrition in 2015.

Sandra's previous educational and research work on obesity prevention and diabetes education with minorities has been presented at various national conferences, published in peer-reviewed journals, and featured in national and international TV and printed media.

Mila Ferrer
Mila Ferrer, Blogger, Diabetes Advocate
Mila started to blog about type 1 diabetes in July 2011, five years after Jaime, her youngest son, was diagnosed with type 1 at the age of three. She lives every day advocating for more and better education about diabetes, not only for the people affected by this condition and their families, but for the general population too. Through her blog, "Jaime, mi dulce guerrero," her strong social media presence, and public speaking engagements, Mila shares her experiences and provides peer-to-peer support for the Latino community.

She has been recognized as a Diabetes Leader by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and as a Top Latina Influential Blogger by Latinos in Social Media (LATISM). Mila is also a member of the Diabetes Advocates (DA), a collective of individuals and organizations that offers expertise, resources, and support to those touched by diabetes. She is one of the few Spanish resources for the DA and their only Spanish resource who is also the parent of a child with diabetes. Mila is also the Community Manager on EsTuDiabetes.org, the largest Hispanic online community for people touched by diabetes.
Manny Hernandez
Manny Hernandez, SVP, Member Experience of Livongo Health and Co-founder of Diabetes Hands Foundation
Manny is an internationally recognized health advocate who has lived with diabetes since 2002. With a background in electrical engineering and a compelling approach to working with people, Manny has been able to build bridges between the worlds of technology and business. These combined passions led to the creation of Diabetes Hands Foundation (DHF), a nonprofit he co-founded in 2007, driven by the belief that no one living with diabetes should feel alone. Under his leadership, DHF became a global leader in diabetes social media, and an influential group in diabetes advocacy.

In May 2015, Manny joined Livongo Health as their Senior Vice President - Member Experience. At Livongo, he is helping reinvent the way they manage chronic conditions (starting with diabetes) through technology, real-time information, and human support to make life easier for people with chronic conditions.

Manny holds advisory and key volunteer roles with Diabetes Hands Foundation, International Diabetes Federation, American Diabetes Association, Diabetes Coalition of California, and other groups. Born in Venezuela, he came to the U.S. in 2000. He lives in California with his wife and artist Andreina Davila, his son, Santiago, and their dog, Lucas.

As a Type A personality with a perfectionist streak, diabetes management is something that easily gets under my skin. If I can’t do something perfect, then I’d much rather just not do it at all. Which is why burnout creeps up on me super fast. A few days of pesky numbers and I am ready to throw all things diabetes out the window and watch it get hit by an 18-wheeler. So attempting to get my A1c into the lowest possible range ever has proven incredibly tasking for my perfectionist...
