GLP-1 Agonists
GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide 1) is a natural protein that works to lower blood sugar. Agonists copy the action of GLP-1. The medicine acts like the natural substance but does not break down as fast. GLP-1 agonists stop lowering blood sugar once it reaches a normal level. Early testing of GLP-1 agonists showed thyroid tumors in rats. It remains to be seen whether or not GLP-1 agonists can cause thyroid cancer in people. Learn more about the GLP-1 agonists used by people with type 2 diabetes.
