Growing up in Orlando, Florida, Delta Burke was voted “Most Likely to Succeed” in high school, and succeed she did. Competing in the Miss America Pageant as Miss Florida in 1974, Burke soon received a scholarship to study for two years at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts. Returning to the America in the late 1970’s, she landed her first TV role within a month of moving to Los Angeles. Yet it wasn’t until 1986 that she was began the role that made her famous -- playing Suzanne Sugarbaker in the hit 80’s sitcom "Designing Women." A favorite character, she would win two Emmys for her performance in 1990 and 1991.
Leaving the show in 1991, Burke was forced to deal with a much-publicized weight problem, obsessive-compulsive disorder, depression, and type 2 diabetes. But Burke used her misfortune to benefit others. The public nature of her medical problems made her famous for not just acting, but for taking control of her own health, including blood glucose control. Burke lost 60 pounds for a role in the Broadway show Steel Magnolias. She has also appeared in a variety of roles in television and movies, including "Boston Legal," "Touched by an Angel," and Sweet Potato Queens.
