Award-winning Fashion Designer Sergey Ermakov was born in Kiev, Ukraine in 1972. Ermakov studied painting and graphic art at The Art School under the Pioneer Place, followed by garment school and lux-tailoring, including The University of Light Industry. He opened his own design studio in Kiev at the age of 24, influenced by his mother, an expert seamstress. Now one of the biggest names in Ukrainian haute couture, Ermakov is determined to share his story of living successfully with vision loss.
Ermakov was diagnosed with diabetic retinopathy at age 11, and thought his career as a fashion designer was over when he lost most of his vision at age 30. But, according to the Russian designer, his love for fashion and his need to earn a living helped him to continue. After losing 95 percent of his vision, Ermakov can still see fabric colors if he gets very close, and he relies on his design team, his memories, and his sense of touch to create designs. Imagining by touch, Ermakov sketches his designs after talking with clients about what they want, then hands them off to his design team to turn into reality.
Regardless of Ermakov’s vision problems, his work doesn’t seem to suffer. While his evening dresses are a hit in the Ukraine, Ermakov’s designs have recently premiered in Dallas, Texas. His designs have been called “Tim Burton meets Bob Mackie meets Alexander McQueen;” “extraordinary;” “fantastical;” “wow.” Ermakov also participates in an array of promotions and fundraisers. His Dallas creation valued at more than $10,000, for example, was raffled off with proceeds benefiting the American Foundation for the Blind Center on Vision Loss in Dallas.
