2 tbsp  canola oil
1 each  Cabbage, red, fresh, head, small, 4"
2 each  medium apples
2 each  bay leaves
1 tsp  ground cloves
0 1/2 tsp  ground ginger
0 1/2 tsp  salt
1 tbsp  sugar
3 tbsp  fresh lemon juice
  1. Heat the oil in a large, heavy soup pot. Add the cabbage and brown about 4 to 6 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  2. Add the apples, bay leaves, cloves, ginger, salt, sugar, and 1 1/2 cups water. Bring to a boil, reduce heat, cover, and simmer 30 minutes.
  3. Remove and discard the bay leaves. Stir in the lemon juice. Serve warm.
