5 each  raw egg yolks
1 1/2 cup  whole milk
0 1/4 cup  sugar
1 1/2 tsp  vanilla extract
  1. In a medium heavy pot, stir together the egg yolks, milk, and sugar.
  2. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly with a wooden spoon, until mixture coats the back of a clean metal spoon. Remove pot from heat and stir in vanilla.
  3. Quickly place the pot in a large bowl of ice water, 1 or 2 minutes, to cool immediately, stirring constantly.
  4. Pour custard into a bowl and cover with plastic wrap to prevent skin from forming. Refrigerate at least 2 hours. Do not stir before serving.
