  1. Preheat grill to medium high.
  2. Brush each side of onion slice with 4 tablespoons olive oil and place rings on baking sheet.
  3. Sprinkle with salt and pepper. Thread onions onto metal skewers.
  4. Cook onions, 10 to 12 minutes, turning once.
  5. Transfer onions to cutting board and cool slightly. Remove skewers and cut onion slices in half.
  6. Place in serving bowl and toss gently, separating the layers.
  7. Add tomatoes, basil, salt, and pepper.
  8. Drizzle remaining oil and vinegar over salad and toss gently.
