Servings
Ingredients

1 tbsp  extra virgin olive oil
1 each  large onion
1 each  medium garlic cloves
14 oz  canned garbanzo beans (chickpeas), unsalted
1 cup  bread crumbs
1 each  eggs
1 pinch  black pepper
1 tbsp  chickpea flour
2 tbsp  Chinese 5-spice powder
1 tsp  olive oil
Directions
  1. In a large frying pan over low heat, heat 1 tablespoon of oil and cook the onion and garlic until golden, roughly 5 minutes.
  2. Blend the chickpeas in a food processor and puree until they resemble breadcrumbs.
  3. Next, add the fresh breadcrumbs, egg, pepper, then the onion and garlic, and process for a few seconds, just to combine the ingredients. If the mixture is too wet, add the chickpea flour to thicken.
  4. To prepare the burgers, use 1 heaping tablespoon of the mixture to make roughly 8 total burgers.
  5. Mix the Chinese 5-spice with water and then brush the burgers generously with the mixture. Allow the burgers to marinate for 20 or so minutes.
  6. When ready to cook, heat 1 teaspoon of olive oil in a nonstick frying pan or griddle and cook the burgers over medium heat for 4 to 5 minutes on each side, or until browned. Don't heat too high, or they will burn, and the flavor will spoil.
