Ingredients Directions
  1. Coat a large pot with nonstick cooking spray and melt the margarine over medium heat.
  2. Add the onion, and cook, stirring frequently, for 20 minutes, or until it is golden.
  3. Add the sugar, and stir well.
  4. Add the flour stirring constantly for 1 minute, then gradually add the water, beef broth, and beef consommé.
  5. Bring to a boil and cover; reduce the heat and simmer for 30 minutes.
  6. Stir in the Worcestershire sauce and Sherry, if you desire.
  7. Preheat the broiler, and place eight oven proof soup bowls on a baking sheet.
  8. Fill with the soup, and top each with a slice of French bread.
  9. Sprinkle the cheese evenly over the bread, and broil several minutes, or until the cheese is melted.
