  1. Place the chicken, celery, onion, carrots, and bay leaf in a large pot filled with water and broth, and bring the water and broth to a boil, and then add the barley.
  2. Reduce the heat, and cover and cook until the chicken and barley are done, about 30 minutes.
  3. Season with the salt and pepper, and add the basil, and cook the pasta according to the package directions, omitting oil and salt.
  4. Drain and add the pasta to the chicken soup, and remove the bay leaf.
