1 Combine figs, pears, water, and brown sugar in a pot and bring to a boil. Lower heat and simmer 20 minutes, until mixture is thick. Using a food processor blender, puree mixture until smooth. 2 Using electric beaters, blend margarine and sugar until fluffy; mix in egg whites and vanilla. Combine flour, baking soda, and salt and gradually mix into margarine mixture. Form dough into 4 logs, wrap in plastic wrap, and chill 1 hour. 3 Roll 1 log out on a floured surface into a 12 x 5-inch flat rectangle. Spread 1/4 of the fruit mixture onto dough. Fold sides of dough over filling, pressing edges to seal. Slice log in half and lay seam side down on a greased cookie sheet. 4 Continue making logs with the rest of the ingredients. Coat each log with milk. 5 Bake at 350 degrees F for 12 minutes or until golden brown. Let cool and slice into bars.

Any dried, chewy fruit will work in these bars.
