Interview with Dr. Mark Hinkes, DPM, Author of Healthy Feet for People with Diabetes (Continued)

Joy: What if someone has high blood sugars for a long time. Can they turn things around?

Dr. Hinkes: We can change anything in our life if we really want to change. People do things because they think it makes them feel good. It is not necessarily the things they are doing, but that they associate that activity as pleasant. For example, if you smoke cigarettes, you think they make you feel good. But in reality cigarettes are poison. It's not the cigarette that makes you feel good; it is that you associate the cigarette with feeling good. It could be relaxation, your coffee, whatever it is for you. Horseradish!!! If you change what cigarettes means to you, if you think, "This cigarette kills me and it is poison," in time you will stop.

As for your blood sugars, you simply have to want to have your blood sugars in control to do it. I've seen it 10,000 times. When people have the education, they have the power. When they are empowered they can accomplish almost anything. It's never too late; here are four questions you need to ask yourself about why your blood sugars are too high:

1. Am I eating too much of what I should eat or what I shouldn't be eating?
2. Am I not taking the right dose of medicine?
3. Am I not taking my medicine at the right time?
4. Am I not taking my medicine?

It's always one or more of those things.

Joy: Thank you Dr. Hinkes. I read your book, Healthy Feet for People With Diabetes. What I like most about it is that it answers the questions people have in a language everyday people can understand. The book is filled with pictures to help the readers recognize problems they may have.

When it comes to caring for diabetic feet, the saying is true; An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. You have the preventive and curative methods in your book. I think this is a book everyone who is touched by diabetes in any way should have and read. This means if you have diabetes, have a loved one or friend who has diabetes, or if you are a healthcare provider you must read Dr. Hinkes's book, Healthy Feet for People With Diabetes.

Many people say that depression is a side effect or complication of diabetes. Without discounting the association of the psychological condition with the physical one, I'm not convinced that our high and/or unstable glucose levels are directly responsible for that change in our mental state. My belief is that the unrelenting need for self-care, for following the sort of care schedules that can drive licensed, professional caregivers crazy, is what overwhelms us...
