Thyroid The thyroid gland is the organ located in the lower front part of the neck. It is part of the endocrine system and releases thyroid hormone responsible for controlling how quickly the body burns energy–metabolism. Thyroid hormone also helps maintain the central nervous system and cardiovascular system. Thyroid disorders are more common in people with diabetes–women in particular–so have your thyroid tested at least once a year.
