I have a question regarding efficiency of insulin.

Background Info Hide
I always bring an extra vial of both Lantus and Humalog insulin when traveling. I know that after opening a new vial of insulin, it is only effective for 28 days. However, how long do the unopened vials of insulin last that I bring along as a back up? I don't always have access to refrigeration when traveling and certainly not on planes. Even though they are not yet opened, but out of the fridge and within normal temperature ranges, do they also begin their '28 day count down'?

Thanks for asking dLife.

At room temperature, with either opened or unopened Novolog, there is still a 28 day shelf life. If unopened and kept refrigerated, Novolog is good to use until the expiration date on the vial.

Consider purchasing Novolog when you are away. If you use a national chain pharmacy (such as Walgreens or Wal-mart), you could check with the pharmacist before you leave. Perhaps you can refill prescriptions on the road. These pharmacies keep the scripts in their network so any store can fill them.

Take care and happy travels!
