Dear Jess 59,

Congrats on maintaining an active lifestyle. While I would like to give you a simple answer to your question, I cannot do so without knowing more about your actual diabetes regimen. You can exercise anytime you want to, but you run a higher risk of developing low blood glucose levels when you're active during a time when your insulins are peaking. I'm assuming you actually take a mix of rapid-acting and longer-acting insulin. The latter serves as a basal insulin that is not used to cover meals. The one with a greater impact on exercise responses is any insulin that is absorbed within 2-3 hours--assuming you exercise during that time. If you wait until that insulin is mostly gone (after 2-3 hours), your risk of getting low decreases. It also depends how much insulin you take and whether you can reduce the dose in anticipation of exercise. So, I can only recommend at this point that you avoid exercising for 2-3 hours after eating to lower your risk for hypoglycemia, although you can alter your regimen to make it possible to exercise more closely after eating.
