Is there an oral medication for people with high creatinine levels?

Kidney cancer survivor with only one kidney. Creatinine level 1.5 - 1.6. Doc says metformin out and only alternative is insulin. Currently pre-diabetic trying to control with diet and excersize. Glucose levels before diet were 110 - 140.
