Any advice for preparing for a colonoscopy? In my 1st attempt, my blood sugar was over 600, we had to reschedule.

Type 1 since 2009. A1C around 7.1 to 7.4. Stress raises my BG. I know I'm supposed to count my carbs, I just don't understand why my BG was so high. I was a little stressed out because of the colonoscopy (I was supposed to drink 3 liters of the laxative and spent the night throwing it all up) but over 600 seems a bit high. I didn't think I was that stressed out.

Hello,

Thanks for asking dLife.

In anticipation for a colonoscopy, patients with diabetes continue to count their carbohydrates while on clear liquids. Clear liquids include clear broth, white grape juice, apple juice, clear sodas, lemon or orange jell-o, and sports drink (such as Gatorade).

Approximately 150-180 grams of carbohydrate may be distributed in 6-7 mini-meals throughout the day. A pattern could be 20-30 grams carbohydrate (such as 4-8 oz. clear juice) every 2 hours will help keep blood glucose leveled. In between, consider carbohydrate-free beverages, sugar-free popsicles, and diet lemon jell-o, that do not influence blood glucose levels. Check your blood glucose often.

Talk with your doctor or diabetes educator about your target blood glucose during the prep and diabetes medicine adjustments. If you need help with carbohydrate counting, talk with a registered dietitian.

Take care.

Thanks for the advice. I took 4 units of Levemir the night before I went on the liquid diet and 3 units of Levemir the night before the procedure. I drank water, black coffee, green sugar free jello, chicken broth and diet 7-Up. Think I need some sugar in my diet so my doctor told me to take a unit or two of Novolog before i drink juice. This time I'm drinking half the amount of laxative and taking a pill. Hopefully I won't get sick. The doctor told me that getting sick also contributed to the rise in my blood sugar. Need to relax and treat this as another regular day!!!

Could the liquid laxative have had sugar in it? I've taken pills when I had it once before. Also, did you stop all your insulin? My doc said to decrease my basal insulin a little, but to definitely take it and to monitor through the day to make sure you don't go low. If you're a little low you can have regular jello or something like that. Don't know if that is helpful, I haven't done it yet while using insulin.
