Is it still required to use control solution with every vial of test strips?
Asked By: rubybenubi

Background Info Hide
When diagnosed in 2007, every vial of test strips had to be coded and then tested for accuracy by using control solution. That was with my One Touch meter. I have recently switched to the Kroger brand meter, test strips, and lancets and have continued using control solution even tho coding is no longer an issue. I have had difficulty obtaining the solution and finally got around to reading the instructions which no longer indicate testing every vial. Instructions say to do so with a new meter or if you suspect damage to the meter or inaccurate readings. My MD said to follow the instructions and test if I thought I should. So, should every vial of strips be tested? If that's no longer necessary, I can certainly find something else to spend $18.00 every 3 months.

Opinions on this vary, but with the great technology and accuracy in meters today, I can say that if you follow those instructions in the meter you should be good. I would actually use control solution if the meter is exposed to extreme temperatures or if you drop it, and when you change batteries. I always suggest that patients keep at least two meters because if you suspect one is malfunctioning, you have another meter to compare it with. You should stay with the same type of meter as your back-up, since results with other brands may vary slightly.
