Dear patricia64,

Thank you for writing dLife!

When it comes to diabetes management, all carbs are not created equally, which is why it’s important to know how to choose your carbs wisely. Fiber is a type of carbohydrate, so you should focus on choosing carb-rich foods that are also rich in fiber.

A good source of fiber contains 3 – 5 grams per serving. Some good sources of fiber are fresh fruit like apples and berries; vegetables such as broccoli or cabbage; whole grain products including breads from whole wheat, rye, bran or oat; and dried beans and peas.

Another way to get more fiber in your diet is to sprinkle wheat germ, or flax seed on yogurt or salads. Two tablespoons of wheat germ contains 2 grams of fiber and 2 tablespoons flaxseed has 4 grams.

A food diary is the best way to track your daily carb and fiber intake. For more fiber-rich foods, click here.
