When doing a random fasting test at home, does the food you eat and the length of time you wait after a meal make a difference in the numbers?

My fasting numbers in my last lab work was 115. I am a very fit and active person and eat very healthy. That number seems extremely high for a 15 hour fast for someone like me. The last time I had my numbers checked was 7 years ago and it was a random glucose done at a lab two hours after I ate. My numbers were above 200. They retested with a fasting and it was normal so they said it was probabbly lab error. I am now wondering if maybe that was tuely a lab error. We tests A1cs at work and mine have allways been normal. I wanted to see if higher sugars food were my problem, since I don't consume them very often and my A1cs are normal. I tested a half cup of ice cream and about a half hour after I ate it my sugars were at 153. I read that numbers over 140 were pre-diabetic but wasn't sure if it mattered what the food type was and how long of time between eating and testig changed that.

thanks for your question rafoth. what you eat can make a difference in what your blood sugar is 30min after you eat. typically foods higher in fat and protein can delay how quickly your body digests carbs and turns them into surgar in your blood stream. so a bowl of ice cream would take longer to raise your blood sugar than a food that is mostly just carbohydrates (like an apple or pretzels). when testing for diabetes (or pre diabetes), you are usually given a 75grams of sugar dissolved in water and then tested 2 hrs later. if your blood sugar at that time is greater than 140, but less than 200, you would be considered 'pre diabetic'. you said that your last fasting blood sugar was 115. the american diabetes association considers any fasting blood sugar over 100 but less than 126 as 'at risk for daibetes' or 'prediabetic'. you also mentioned that your A1c test was 'normal' but didn't say what the number was. an A1c of 5.7 to 6.4 woudl be considered to be 'prediabetic' and anything above 6.5 would be considered diabetic. my advice to you woudl be, if you suspect you may be diabetic, that you ask your doctor to have an oral glucose tolerance test to see what the result is. also it would be a good idea to continue having your A1c and blood sugar checked regularly. hope you find this information helpful.

IF YOU ARE DIABETIC, everything you eat and when, will affect your #'s in one way or another. What you're looking for is consistancy in timing,food,& numbers. Only then can you judge what's affecting you and by how much. And then, too,every one is different. I can eat potatos,but rice drives my #'a over a cliff. Keep a log for a while and you'll learn a lot! Good luck!

I can tell you that my Doctor & Diabetic Educator both suggest for me & I don't know if it's for everone since I'm still new to the club, is 80-130 for fasting or pre meal & less than 160 2hrs after a meal.
