Which low cost glucometers would you recommend?
Asked By: pennmedstudent

Background Info Hide
I'm a medical student who manages a free clinic. Many of our patients have DM but cannot afford regular glucose testing supplies. Do you have any recommendations on low cost glucometers and testing supplies? The cheapest option I found were the ReliOn Glucometers from Walmart ($9 for the meter, $20 for 50 strips). Are there any programs that provide these for low/no cost?

Hello pennmedstudent

Thank you for bringing your concern to dLife. Finding a free glucometer is easy. Many manufactures will happily send you a free meter. It is the test strips that are costly.

If you are working at a free clinic, many of your patients may have Medicaid Insurance. Their glucometers and testing supplies should be free as long as they use the meter offered on the formulary from their insurance coverage.

As for patients that are coming to the free clinic but are not on Medicaid, please first advise them to call their county or state welfare office to see if they qualify for coverage. If not, getting low cost testing supplies is a challenge but on-line searches may help find "sales" on these items. The dLife Forum may have some ideas from peers that have been in the same situation. Refer your patients to dLife Forum for peer to peer advice. Diabetes Peer to Peer Forums.
