Unfortunately ken, my OBGYN does not agree with you and has stated on numerous occasions that Gestational diabetes can and probably will go away after I have the baby because my original testing numbers were not high enough to indicate that it was a long term issue. My fasting glucose was never a problem. It was 95, 91 and 87 on the three one-hour tests I was given. It was the after-glucose numbers that were the issue. They were 156, 151, and 161, respectively. I cannot have fish because of the mercury. I haven't eaten fruit in three months. My cholesterol levels have risen since I started the diabetic diet, which has caused red meat, pork, and most other meats except for plain chicken breasts to be eliminated. I cannot eat nuts because of the high salt content and the blood pressure issues. I cannot eat root veggies according to my dietician and eggs are 100% out of the question because of the rising cholesterol levels. I've drank nothing but water and milk for three months, and the milk is skim milk which might as well be water but the baby has to have calcuim from somewhere and since cheese is also out because of the cholesterol issue, I have no choice. I've been living off of salads with baked chicken chunks and fat-and-carb-free dressings (which are hard as heck to find both), and water, with a glass of skim milk once a week. I am constantly hungry and the salads are not filling me up anymore. The salads I make have nothing but baked chicken chunks with no salt and no seasonings, lettuce and cucumbers. I don't dare add anything else to them for the fear of raising one set of the numbers. However, I am still starving on a regular basis, I go to bed hungry and wake up every couple of hours because of the pain from hunger. I've told my dietician this and they don't seem to be able to take the time to sit down with me and come up with something. They brush it off as it's just me being stubborn, and send me home, refusing to address the hunger issue.
First, please understand that GD is not a separate and distinct disorder from diabetes. GD is simply diabetes made manifest by the additional metabolic demands your pregnancy causes. So I would encourage you to tackle your diabetes. You don't mention your FBG, but you mention elevated cholesterol and BP. Elevated cholesterol and BP are largely symptoms of diabetes, so getting your diabetes under control will likely normalize the other two symptoms. I would listen to your dietician regarding cholesterol. Most of the cholesterol in the body is manufactured by the body (75%-85%) and is manufactured out of glucose! Yes glucose. So by restricting your fats you are by definition increasing your ingestion of protein and carbohydrates which tends to increase your cholesterol levels. Dietary carbohydrates increase serum cholesterol much more than dietary fats or cholesterol. I would strongly recommend the paleolithic diet (lean meats, fish, vegetables/fruits, and to a lesser degree eggs, nuts, and root vegetables). In your case, I would greatly reduce the fruit as a source of dietary carbohydrate in favor of "above-ground" vegetables. Cut out all soda, milk, fruit juice, and greatly reduce all food made of any grain (corn, wheat, oats, barley, rye), rice, or potatoes. This diet will nourish you and your baby wonderfully and keep your BG in check. Really. You have nearly total control over the symptoms you have listed. Good luck.
