I have neuropathy in my feet. I'm taking 1300 mg of acetyll & carnitine and 5000 micrograms of methyl B-12. What's your opinion on it? I'm diabetic 2.

I really like the idea of using natural products to help with neuropathy. I have had patients use relaxation therapy such as meditation and yoga to treat nerve pain. With any oral supplement care must be taken to make sure that you are using them at the right dose. The studies that have been published about the effectiveness of acetyl carnitine and the B vitamins in general in treating neuropathy and nerve issues in general are interesting and can be compelling. A note of caution however; they are not without potential side effects and depending on your current health profile (kidney function, etc) may create other issues, especially the acetyl carnitine. The first step in helping neuropathy is making sure your diabetes is in good control. There is a place for alternate therapy to treat a myriad of issues, but only after careful collaboration with your own health care team! Topically, there are products like Neuragen(R) which is a plant based treatment for neuropathy that has had good results with less of a possibility of systemic side effects.

Dear Susan, I get a kick from the folks, even homeopathic writers...always hedging, instead of standing for something, like anyone with real character will do.... "A note of caution however; they are not without potential side effects and yadda yadda forever....Isnt it far more likely the big pharmas are going to have much worse side effects...from all the toxic trash they put out? Somehow we never that however...its VERY UNLIKELY anyone will die from a supplement od...many DO die from errors etc from pharms

I have had a great deal of improvement/relief in my foot neuropathy with using Eucerin Original moisturizing Creme (not lotion). It comes in a jar not a tube. I apply it to the bottom of my feet every other day after showering. I also apply it at night along with taking an acetaminophen when I am having foot pain/discomfort that keeps me awake. I have had diabetes and neuropathy for 10 years.
