Why do I continue to lose weight without even trying?

I was diagnosed with insulin intolerance 6 months ago. My doctor advised me to lose about 15 pounds - I did by exercising 6 days a week and changing my diet to tons of vegetables, gluten-free breads, very lean cuts of meat, fish 2-3 times a week and limited carbs. I check my blood sugar 2-3 times daily - my morning check is around 4.8 mmol, my 2 hours before eating readings are between 4.7 & 5.9 and my 2 hours after eating are between 4.6 & 6.9. To date I have lost a total of 20 pounds. The problem is I continue to lose weight and I am not even trying to. I currently weigh 127 pounds and my height is 5 feet, five inches. My BMI is 22.1. What could be causing me to continue to lose a pound a week?

Dear Cherylst: First, let me commend you for the efforts you've given to your condition, as well as the excellent blood sugar results you report. Due to the fact that your blood sugar is now apparently under good control, your diabetes would not be considered a factor in your continuing weight loss. You have substantially reduced your caloric intake in order to lose weight, therefore it sounds as if it is time to increase your calories in order to stop the weight loss at this time. Generally this is accomplished by adding 100-200 calories per day, for a week, and watching the scale to see how this works for you. Some people need substantially more calories than others, based on body type, metabolism, activity, etc. Of course weight loss can also be a side effect of high thyroid levels, or other underlying medical conditions. I would suggest you meet with a Registered Dietitian to assure your caloric needs are being met. If this does not halt the weight loss, then you will need to meet with your doctor so that tests can be run to rule out a physical condition, or, perhaps, even depression.
