Dear Bob,

Thank you for writing dLife. By it’s nature diabetes is a progressive disease that changes over time. Those changes often result in the need for a change in therapy to maintain blood glucose levels – even when you’re not “doing anything different.”

One cause of unintentional weight loss is hyperglycemia – blood glucose levels above normal. Typical signs of high blood glucose are excessive thirst, increase urination, increased appetite and glucose in your urine. When you lose glucose through your urine, you are losing calories as well – thus the unintentional weight loss.

Checking your blood glucose levels is a great starting point to uncover the root cause of your weight loss. Additionally, a visit to your healthcare provider will provide further clarity as to whether a change in your diabetes medication is necessary.

Good luck and be well…
