Hello Whiz616
Thank you for bringing your question to dLife. You ask if Metformin and Actos are good for Diabetes. Well, Metformin is recommended as a first line drug of choice for the treatment of Diabetes where lifestyle changes were not effective. Actos is also recommended as a alternate medication choice. So to say are they good for Diabetes, yes for many people.

Your second question asks if these medicines will cause kidney problems. Well, Metformin is excreted though the renal system (Kidneys). If a person has decreased renal function, the metformin will not be cleared as fast as with normal function. Doctors monitor kidney function of diabetics and if they see a problem, they would most likely choose a different medication than Metformin.

I had decreased kidney function and it was getting bad. My doctor took me off metformin. Blood work shows the disease has stabilized and function increased slightly. I took metformin for 9 yrs.
