Background Info Hide
Diabetic about 6 years. Had multiple infections and steroid spinal injections so they started me on insulin. I can not afford it so I have stopped and am eating very low carb. Sugars are now from 140 to 160. Do you think this is dangerous if I keep my sugars at this level. I have a stone and cyst in the kidney and take cipro daily. I will be eligible for more help in august. Think I will be safe?

I understand that the cost of insulin can be high; but there are ways to get help with paying for diabetes medications through various organizations such as the ADA. That being said; it would appear that you are keeping your blood sugars in control currently. I would check with your own health care team to assess your diabetes control. Some people can reduce or eliminate certain medications by being diligent about keeping weight down and watching what they eat. Every patient is different; to make sure you stay "safe", you need to consult your health care professional who can look at your lab values,etc.. High protein diets, for example, can be dangerous if your kidney function is not optimal. Stay safe, and be well!

If your bg levels are from 140 to 160 you are in good shape, I believe. But I guess it all depends on the person. Eating low carb and proteins is great to lower bg, that's what I do. If you need help, I have some left over apidra if you are interested. I'm a type 1 diabetic, trying to replace insulin with exercise just because I loathe the low bg reactions. Email selma1027@aol.com if you live in NYC will be easier to pick it up. Be well.
