Heart disease is the leading cause of death among people with diabetes. Chronic high blood glucose levels (hyperglycemia) can cause the arteries to narrow and/or lose their elasticity. High blood cholesterol levels can clog arteries with fat deposits.

With reduced blood flow (and less oxygen the blood carries), the heart muscle suffers damage or tissue death (i.e., infarction). Although people with diabetes are at a higher risk for developing heart disease, optimal blood glucose control can prevent or delay this disease.
