Background Info Hide
i am on insulin, metforin, & glipizide! i was in direct sunlight, & no shirt! it was very scary & the first day i was so dizzy i almost fell into the pond! should i eat some carbs b-4 going into the sun, or should i stay away from the sun? i have a pool & fishpond, & that would be devastating to me if i was not able to use either!

Dear tippy45, The only way you will truly know what is going on with your blood sugars is to bring your blood glucose meter along and test when you start feeling funny. Without that information, it is hard to accurately know what is going on with you. If you are going low, you might discuss this with your physician and consider an adjustment in one of your medications. You should always have a carbohydrate snack with you at all times, so plan something appropriate for your boating outing. Drink boxes of juice work well for this purpose.

Testing will also help you identify if it had nothing to do with the diabetes and/or if you were just dehydrated from being out in the sun too long without drinking enough. If your sugars are normal or high when this happens, you likely aren't getting enough fluids.

You should always have your meter with you and check your blood sugar before you do activity. You should also have some rapid acting carbs with you at all times to treat lows. There is no reason not to be able to go into the sun or play outside. :) I don't know how often you test, but it helps a lot to test before and after activity. If you don't know why you were dizzy, then it's hard to say whether it was low blood sugar or something else.
