"How do I calculate how many calories I need?"
Asked By: turbojamin

Background Info Hide
I am a type 1 diabetic, 35 year old female, and currently weigh 155lbs and I'm 5 4". I currently exercise around 14 hours a week doing cardio and strength training and eat 1400 calories a day. I pre plan all my meals so I stay on target. In the last 3 years I've lost 132 pounds by calorie counting & exercise, but now I'm stuck. I've tried changing my exercise routine several times over the last 6 months and tried adjusting my calories, but nothing seems to work. I was sent to the local diabetes center but the dietician does the same thing with plastic fruit she did 20 years ago and then talks about boxed frozen meals. I don't understand why I was doing so well, and the past 6 months have been so hard. Please help!

Hello,

Thanks for asking dLife. Congratulations on your weight loss.

As you get closer to your target body weigh, it becomes more challenging to lose the extra pounds.

The gold standard for accurate determination of body composition and the energy required is under water weighing technique. This strategy is not practical. There are several devices that come close. Many health and fitness centers have body composition devices.

There are also calculators for determining daily calorie requirements based on personal profile, such as age, height, weight, level of activity, and lifestyle.

To lose extra body weight, you would need to eat fewer calories than the estimated caloric needs. You can also increase your present level of physical activity.

Take care.
