"I am on 5mg of Byetta. I have ammonia smell on my breath?"
Asked By: pber57

Background Info Hide
I am on 5mg of Byetta. I have been getting phenomenal results however I have an ammonia smell on my breath. I called the Dr and spoke the nurse. She said just monitor it and let her know if I have further problems. I read the smell of ammonia can be a sign of too much protein being broken down and not good for the kidneys. I called ELi Lilly too and they said they had not heard of this symptom with Byetta. What can I do?

Hello PBer57: Thank you for bringing your concern to dLife and please accept my apology for the tardiness of a reply.
I'm glad you spoke with the doctor's office regarding your symptoms, Byetta is contraindicated in any renal/kidney involvements, (I must ask, what is the status of the kidney function: creatinine clearance, mircoalbumin, per the FDA "caution should be applied when initiating or increasing doses of Byetta from 5 mcg to 10 mcg in patients with moderate renal impairment", impairment described as a creatinine clearance (CrCl) 30 to 50 ml/min). Unusual signs or symptoms of intolerance to Byetta include:
  • any altered kidney function, such as changes in urination (color of the urine, frequency, amount), any
  • unexplained swelling in the extremities,
  • changes in blood pressure,
  • lethargy,
  • changes in appetite or digestion,
  • or dull ache in mid to lower back area.

Both the kidneys and the lungs play a very large role in maintaining an efficient balance of hydrogen excretion, (synchronized system as to maintain the acid- base relationship). The blood sugar is under good control, so this odor is not a 'fruity' smell, could it be due to intolerance of lactose, the breath hydrogen smell (?) Recommended protein intake is .8-1 gram per 2.2#s, do a nutrient analysis via Click here to read it.
    Better have it checked out.
    Be your best, regards Sue
