Dear Zuniluni: Uncontrolled blood sugar can affect virtually all parts of you; nerves, vessels, everything that makes you YOU! Those elevated numbers (which generally creep up on us when we aren't testing often enough to make sure they're staying in line), play havoc on the human system. While many of the complications of diabetes will not show up for 10-15 years or more, in the short-term, any infection you come down with will likely spike your blood sugar, making the diabetes much more difficult to deal with and control. My greatest concern with you is the fact that you seem to have put your diabetes up on a shelf, basically ignoring it. Believe me . . . it will NOT go away. The complications that could be prevented will rear their ugly head sooner or later. The fact that you are “constantly sick” as you put it, is evidence of poor control. If you are unable to secure health insurance, then visit a free clinic. One bright spot about working in a night club is that you have time during the day to seek out answers and help. You are worth that time and investment. Please seek education and help to understand and control your diabetes. Nutrition, physical activity, and adequate sleep are all important factors which may not be as difficult to incorporate in your lifestyle as you think. Take care now . . . your future deserves it. Good luck and hang in there.
