"My daughter was recently swift from Novolog to Humalog. The Novolog was working great in controlling her BS. It's been haywire since Humalog!!! "

9 year old female recently diagnosed w/ Type 1. Novolog was working great in controlling her BS levels. Humalog has made her levels sky-rocket. Why is this??? Her DR state that "It's like Coke and Pepsi". SORRY, if I ordered a Coke and got Pepsi, I would notice the difference!!!! So what is the difference between Novolog and Humalog dispite the obvious?

Thank-you for contacting dLIfe.com. What you are noticing with your daughter is real. There are patients that see a difference between the two rapid acting insulins whether they are injecting or are using a pump. There is one study (Eur J Clin Pharmacol 1999 May;55(3):199-203) that found a difference in the peak times 54 minutes with Novolog and 75 minutes with Humolog that may be making a difference for your daughter.

Optimum control is most important for your daughter. Ask to return to Novolog. If it is an insurance issue, document her glucose levels and submit the Novolog versus Humolog records and appeal for a substitution benefit. With good record keeping they should help you with the best medicine for your daughter.
