"Insulin and fat?"
Asked By: celebfash

Background Info Hide
Hi, I am a type 1 diabetic diagnosed 3 and a half years ago. I have gotten myself into a routine of eating healthy and exercising and it has been tremendous for my blood sugar! I'm at the lowest A1C that I've ever been at! :) Since doing this, I have been losing weight and I'm starting to tone up. My upper stomach is thin and getting toned, but my lower stomach still has a layer of fat, and this happens to be where the infusion sites are for my pump. My question is, I've heard that injecting insulin subcutaneously causes fat to build up in that spot. Is that true? Will I ever lose that layer of fat there? Thank you so much!

Dear Cele- Thank-you for contacting dLIfe.com. Great job on getting fit and building muscle tone. What a optimal thing to do for your overall health and diabetes.

I believe what you are referring to is hypertrophy from insulin injections. An accumulation of fat small and round from using the same site over and over. This is simply avoided by good site rotation.

Having a lower abdomen fat layer is often the last thing to tone up in weight loss and exercise. It comes with age, and if you are a female with childbearing and hormones. You can focus on core exercises to increase muscle tone in your abdomen and avoid sugar and refined carbs to reduce abdominal fat.

I do not believe that what you are describing is from the insulin pump. Have your MD check it out and seek his recommendations.

Stay well and stay self managed.
