"What other foods have slow releasing carbs like pizza and pasta?"
Asked By: lrhdr

My 7 year old boy has type 1 diabetes now for a year and he uses the pump. He weighs 60 pounds. When he eats pizza the insulin that he gets for all the carbs give him a low, but later he gets a high because of the slow releasing carbs.

You ask a great question, and the answer may prove different for every individual. Fatty foods slow the digestion of food, so a meal that is high in fat digests over a longer period of time than a meal of the same CHO value without the fat. Proteins absorb over an extended period of time, and can cause a delayed rise in blood glucose, when they are not covered by basal or bolus insulin. Some Doctors actually teach their patients how to calculate their bolus based on a percentage of the grams of Protein eaten. And, a meal that is high in Fiber is absorbed over a longer period of time than a meal without fiber. The way to find out how different food impacts blood glucose is to test before and after. Keep records, watch for trends, and learn what works best!

It is strange, but it is not strange for me. Think about that if I take medication in the evening, my morning BS will be higher, If I take no medication in the evening, my morning BS will be normal. My liver is overreacting, and it does not allow low BS. The conclution is that it may be created by the fact that is the combination of slow digesting foods and over medication. It is called Somogiy Effect.

Protein control that works for me and what I was taught is to ignore first 2 grams, then treat each additional 2 grams of protein as 7 grams of carbs.
