"Can Pravachol or other statin drugs cause neuropathy or rashes as unwelcome side effects?"
Asked By: ecross

Background Info Hide
54 year old Type 1 on pump, A1Cs in the 6s, generally healthy. Have had unexplained rashes on arms and legs, also tingling mostly in lower legs, some in arms. I've been told that statin medications are powerful drugs that can have serious side effects. If neuropathy and rashes are caused by the statins, I'd like to explore other options. P.S. My endo does not believe that I have diabetic neuropathy because I'm very active and have taken care of my diabetes since my diagnosis 15 years ago. Cholesterol is only slightly elevated without meds. Thank you.

Hello,

Thanks for asking dLife.

Congrats for maintaining excellent blood glucose control!

Unfortunately all medications have side effects. Each person responds differently to different medications.

Statins are known to cause mulitple side effects. They do include rashes and neuropathy. The higher the dosage, the greater the likelihood one experiences some side effects.

Some people prefer not to take cholesterol-lowering medications. They are able to control their cholesterol levels with a healthful meal and exercise plan. Talk with a registered dietitian about what changes you can make to improve your lipid profile.
