Congrats on keeping excellent A1C levels! A1C is an indicator of blood glucose control over the last 2-3 months.
Metformin is an oral medicine for controlling blood glucose. You did not mention how long have you been taking it. Has it been the reason that your blood glucose is so well controlled?
If you feel that the diabetes medicine is of no value, talk with your doctor about your concerns. He or she might agree on letting you omit the medicine temporarily on a trial basis. With frequent fingersticks, you can determine how well your blood glucose remain within target range without the medicine. This way, you would know for sure if the medicine has been working or not.
