Dear d- Thank-you fro contacting dLIfe. You are on the right tract. You might indeed need insulin but not what you are taking. The Humalog you are taking is working at your meal times and taking care of the carbohydrates and transporting the glucose into the muscles at meal times. This is controlling your glucose nicely as reflected by your drop in HbA1c.

When considering your fasting a basal insulin such as Lantus or Levemir is most effective to handle glucose levels between meals and during sleep. The effectiveness is seen in the fasting glucose levels.

This model of insulin therapy is called Basal Bolus and modules best exactly what occurs in the non-diabetic.

Show you MD your glucose logs and discuss this option with him. You are doing an excellent job to stay well and to stay self managed.
