"Is it common for Byetta and Novolin R&N to be taken together?"
Asked By: judi self

Background Info Hide
My husband has been on Novolin for a year along with 1000mg of Metforin and Glipizide twice a day. His numbers run between 150 and 200. He is 80 lbs overweight does not test and adjust his Novolin as he should. My concern is now his doctor is adding one more item to his routine (Byetta) and I worry this may interact with his other medicines.

Your question is a very good one and certainly worthwhile of a discussion with your husband's doctor. While Byetta is a very good medication as part of diabetes management, and can help with weight as well, it's use with insulin along with the other diabetes medications do need a closer evaluation by a physician as well as possibly a pharmacist for the combination of effects. It is likely that this regimen could certainly be adjusted for better diabetes control, but also other issues such as nutrition, exercise and other aspects of diabetes care are likely to also need review. Don't hesitate to bring your concerns up to his physician and also consider seeking the assistance of a Certified Diabetes Educator and Registered Dietitian with experience in diabetes to make sure that your husband is receiving support and education. Remember, taking care of diabetes is what happens every day, not only with periodic doctor visits. Best of luck to you!
