Hello shanal2
The new 2010 American Diabetes Association Guidlelines no longer recommends using the term"prediabetes". The current guidelines state that if the fasting blood glucose levels are 100 to 125mg/d you are at high risk of future diabetes. Also, if your HgA1c is 5.7-6.4% you are at high risk of future diabetes.

The new 2010 ADA Guidelines list these diagnosic parameters for diabetes
HgA1c equal to or greater than 6.5%
Fasting Blood Glucose of 126 mg/dl on two occasions
two hour Post Prandial (after eating) Blood Glucose of 200mg/dl on two occasions. If there are obvious symptoms such as extreme thirst, frequent urination and extreme hunger, only one abnormal test is needed for diagnosis.

Metabolic Syndrome is a series of symptoms that when together in one patient, increases their risk of diabetes and heart disease. This term was very popular for a while but is is not used often anymore. Generally, it indicates a person with high blood pressure, high cholesterol, BMI > 30% with large abdominal girth and increased glucose levels.

Discuss with your doctor any abnormal lab results and ask questions about your risk of diabetes. Lifestyle changes such as improving your diet and exercising everyday for 30 minutes is your first step to improving your health.
