HgA1c equal to or greater than 6.5%
Fasting Blood Glucose of 126 mg/dl on two occasions
two hour Post Prandial (after eating) Blood Glucose of 200mg/dl on two occasions.
If there are obvious symptoms such as extreme thirst, frequent urination and extreme hunger, only one abnormal test is needed for diagnosis.
Metabolic Syndrome is a series of symptoms that when together in one patient, increases their risk of diabetes and heart disease. This term was very popular for a while but is is not used often anymore. Generally, it indicates a person with high blood pressure, high cholesterol, BMI > 30% with large abdominal girth and increased glucose levels.
