Hello bulletmemo4fbc
This is a dilemma that our country is trying to change. Healthcare reform is in the news everyday and our leaders in this country do not agree how to solve this problem. Diabetes costs our country billions of dollars. But that does not help to tell you this, you are already experiencing this first hand. Find a free clinic in your area and go. You may have to sit there for the entire day, but your health is at stake. Be sure your provider knows you do not have insurance. Get generic medications prescribed.. Fill your presciptions at one of the drug stores that offer low cost medications. Some drug stores will fill a prescription of a medication such as Metformin for $4 a month or $10 for a 90 day supply. Be proactive and take self-management of your disease seriously. Exercise, diet, follow the treatment plan developed by you and your doctor.

Follow the news and developments of the healthcare reform taking place in the country and learn which politicians deserve your support.

Some insurance companies will take a T2 - IF it is shown to be under excellent control and virtually no other complications, i.e. heart disease, vision trouble, major weight issues, etc. If that is a no go, about 35 states have a high risk health plan available that usually provides either a very short or no waiting period for coverage. There will also be "something else" available in a couple of months (presumably) from under the new Obamacare law, but nobody knows just what yet.

There are also avenues of financial assistance for you out there. I get all of my diabetes medication free from Novo Nordisk and Sanofi Aventis. You can google them and download the patient assistance forms. Also, check out Amazon.com. You can get test strips way cheaper there than in the store. Many hospitals have grant money that will allow you to attend diabetic ed. classes. Contact a diabetic educator at one of your nearby hospitals and talk to them. You can also get free meters from them, the internet, or by calling the different companies that make them. They'll all give you a free meter b/c they want you to purchase their strips. :) And, if you have a doc you like, see if they will accept payment plans. Most will. I don't have insurance, but my doc is awesome and stays on top of my diabetes. He has me fax my sugars to him every week and contacts me every week with what he wants changed or to keep up the good work. If your doctor is not doing this, find a different one. Good luck!
