Background Info Hide
58 y/o female. Diagnosed Type 2 in March 2009. I've lost 37# and have another 13 to go. I just started working out. I take Zumba 2x week and work with a trainer 3 days a week. I eat about 1000 calories per day; 6 meals. I have my afternoon snack about 60 minutes before I train. Tonight when I almost passed out, I was terrified. My BS usually runs about 90-110. I need a snack that will sustain me through my workout. Do I need to increase my daily calories since I've gone from totally sedentary to active?

Hello,

Thanks for asking dLife.

Congrats on your weight loss! However, I am concern that you are eating only 1000 calories. It may not be enough to provide the necessary nutrients or sustain your energy level.

Consider talking with a registered dietitian. He or she can help you establish an individualized healthful meal and exercise plan that is nutritionally balanced and more sustaining. The lower the caloric level, the more careful one has to be in selecting foods to acquire the necessary nutrients for optimal health.

It is good planning to have a light snack with 15-20 grams of carbohydrate about an hour before exercising. Always check your blood glucose immediately prior to and after intensive exercise. This way, you will know how your blood glucose responded to your exercise routine...and if you need to prevent or treat a low blood glucose (<70 mg/dL).

You might start your exercise with a blood glucose about 120 mg/dL. Always avoid driving home or anywhere with a low blood glucose. Safety first!

Take care.
