The first way to treat gestational diabetes is by changing the way you eat and exercising regularly. If your blood sugar levels are still too high after changing the way you eat and exercising regularly, you may need insulin shots. Insulin can help lower your blood sugar level without harming your baby.
For some women, an oral medication, such as glyburide, also may be an option.

The use of metformin in gestational diabetes is not yet accepted as treatment in gestational diabetes. There has been concern about its safety for the fetus, particularly as it crosses the placenta and it may increase the risk of birth defect.
