"There's a possibility my 3 yr-old son is diabetic; he's always thirsty- to where he's drinking other poeple's drinks. Should I limit his fluid intake?"
Asked By: fiazole

Background Info Hide
My mother is diabetic, and just yesterday was told she needed insulin nightly. My son recently started drinking everything he possilbly could- about a week or so ago. He's trying to potty-train, but he's peeing so often & he gets upset when he can't make it to the bathroom & wets his training pants. He's not gaining weight either (but he's always been tall & thin). We're taking him to be seen as soon as there's an opening.

Hello,

Thanks for asking dLife.

Type 1 diabetes is a serious disease and requires immediate treatment. If your son is experiencing any of the following symptoms, contact your healthcare provider immediately for medical evaluation.

  • Excessive thirst

  • Frequent urination

  • Extreme hunger

Type 1 diabetes must be correctly diagnosed so that the proper treatment can be administered.

As long as your son is experiencing frequent urination, he requires fluid replacement.

    Take care.

The thirst is what sent the red flag up for our granddaughter. She would stay so thirsty that she 'snick' water at bedtime cause we limited it to stop bedwetting. Please get tested now to make sure it is or isn't diabetes!

Never limit his fluid intake. Instead insure that he has plenty of drinking water available at all times. Do limit his access to sweets though.
