Yes, high insulin levels can cause the ovaries to make more androgen or “male” hormones. This can cause an increase in body hair, acne, and irregular or inadequate periods. Have you been diagnosed with PCOS or Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome? This is a condition characterized by high insulin levels and infertility. Often a health care provider will use the medication Metformin as an “off label” treatment for infertility. Quite often the Metformin will increase regularity in the menstrual cycle and allow a woman to conceive. Weight loss can also improve fertility, especially in women with PCOS
