"Is it safe to take vinegar to lower blood sugar levels for gestational diabetes?"
Asked By: tammicooks

Background Info Hide
I have read about some benefits of taking 1-2 teaspoons of vinegar at night to help with lowering my fasting levels. But I also have heard stories of the effects of vinegar during pregnancy, like causing miscarriages or pre-term labor, and I don't know if those are true or not. I am 35wks with gestational diabetes.

Thanks for writing dLife. There really should be no problem at all using vinegar with your meals. I commonly recommend one of the healthiest dressings for salads and vegetables- olive oil and vinegar. However, it is important to realize that this may not have a significant effect on your blood sugar levels to keep them in the desired range, and tight blood sugar control is very important during pregnancy. So be sure to test your blood glucose levels as advised, follow your prescribed diet- especially watching carbohydrate portions as prescribed, and discuss your progress with your physician and registered dietitian/diabetes educator. Best of luck to you!
