From what I have seen a good place to start is a website called dogs4diabetics. The cost is about 150.00 if you qualify to get one. The application process is extensive, and no other dog can live in the home, I believe. The child must be age 12 and above, so this should be good timing for you. You can go to the website and call with questions. Good Luck!

Dogs4Diabetics only works with people in CA at this time. There are only a couple of other programs that train these dogs in the USA. See: BethedenKennels in OK; Guardian Angel Diabetic Alert Dogs in CO; Scentangels in MN; WildroseKennels in MS, AdobeKennels in TX. I have a DAD (diabetic alert dog) they work much like a CGM and cost approx the same. The dogs are protected out in public by the Americans w/Disabilities Act for hypoglycemic-unaware Diabetics ONLY.

I just read about dogs4diabetics. I didn't know that there is a program that trains dogs. It is wonderful. When my insulin was being changed around I haed some low blood sugars. In the middle of the night my German Shepherd Sasha would cry and bump the bed. When I didn't wake up she jumped on the bed (which she isn't allowed to do) and jumped on my chest. I thought that she needed to go outside for a walk but noooo she didn't have to go at all and I was so frustrated. Came back inside got changed back in bed and all of a sudden realized my bs was low low. Went to check it and it was 35. the next morning my husband asked what Sasha's problem was last night and I told him. He didn't believe me but after the same scenario happened my husband the skeptic believes. Disclaimer...Get a dog that has been trained. I got lucky and my dog realized something was wrong. She has not been trained.
