We no longer use the term "borderline". Fasting blood sugars 100-125 and 2 hours after meals 141-199 are "prediabetes" which means if no changes are made over half of these people will have diabetes in the next few years. Your husband's family history also make him at increased risk. Some insurance companies are still not paying for blood sugar testing supplies for "Prediabetes". Walmart and Kroger pharmacies both have store brand meters and strips that are very affordable if you have to pay for them yourselves. It would be my recommendation that he test fasting and 2 hours after meals daily for a baseline, then fasting & alternate after meals (for example breakfast one week, lunch one week, dinner one week). If your doctor minimizes the significance of his prediabetes and family history I would recommend a new doctor who is more aggressive in prevention. Research shows that life style changes in meal planning, daily activity and weight loss prevent diabetes from developing on over half of the people. This is a window of opportunity to prevent or at least further delay the development of diabetes in your husband. Thanks for making dLife part of your health care team. Stay proactive!
