Dear doncullen. I think for most medical people, over a period of time usually refers to a year or longer. For instance, having elevated glucose readings for six months will probably be causing damage. It is the cummulation of the damage that eventually leads to health issues that become apparent, eg, losing protein in the urine, seeing diabetes retinopathy, etc. A reading of 150 is slightly higher than we would like to see, but not extremely high. I would think damage would be slow, but it is interesting to note that some people with good control still develop diabetes organ injury and some with horrible control appear to be healthy. We know the probability that the person who has controlled blood sugars is definitely less (better), so we will always promote the best blood sugar, blood pressure, and lipid control possible.
