Hello Jerry_811: Thanks for asking dLife, good job in monitoring the blood glucose and taking action. The ultimate 'goal' of self-blood glucose monitoring is to be able to 'evaluate your response' to medications' therapy and achieve the blood glucose goals identified by your PCP, (generally, always <140-180 mg/dl,per ADA, AACE). Consequent, are you meeting those goals as identified by your Personal Care Physician (PCP)? General recommendations are:
  • when using multiple insulin injections or an insulin pump testing frequency is four or more times per day, suggested times to check plasma glucose levels are
  • two hours after the start of the meal if pre-meal blood glucose values are within desired ranges, but A1C targets are not met, (A1c recommended to be <7%). Continued self-managing of diabetes is 'education', topics important to diabetes management:
  • medical nutrition therapy,
  • monitoring glucose levels,
  • the importance of physical activity,
  • stress management,
  • pharmacological therapies and other health strategies to prevent complications of diabetes and attain optimal health. Diabetes educations can assist in identifying
  • signs or symptoms of hypoglycemic
  • what to do if illness or injury occurs
  • how and whys for the actions of
  • timing of foods/snacks
  • activity
  • medications actions. Self-management skills include: knowing factors that affect accuracy; being able to evaluate blood glucose results; and taking appropriate action when necessary. Be your best, regards Sue
